Class notes from 1/3 and 29/3

Notes from 1/3-22

Mat had us start by writing our name, section, and date on our index cards along with drawing a portrait of ourselves “in a marching band” for 2 min. Then Maia read the last class logs.

After, we went over the syllabi and said we would move on from the last classes. Mat was a little stressed that we would not understand the idea of mentor text and learning about a community that we are in now. The questions do not need to be formal.

We talked about the checklist. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1f53yOj4xDhHBZH_2QoVdzrbPkbWRg1v_NBe7FNKpfOw/edit (rhetorical conventions is the way people make arguments). On Thursday, Mat will give us a response to our papers. A mentor is just anyone ahead of you in the “game”. We are supposed to put everything on our Wix Website. It can be in blog form.

We listened to the first mentor text talks. Started with a video/podcast that was approximately 10 minutes long. It was about politics, conservatives vs. liberals. Middle ground is a podcast that is very open and lets people show their opinions. He talked about misconceptions, and how the channel works. Composition wise he learned that there are always new people that come and discuss. It is very raw, progressive, and futuristic. He says that keeping it simple can be beneficial, which can be beneficial for his writing as well. Let the content be the argument.

Then we started to read Appendix 2: Social Identity Worksheet and talked about personality. We started to answer the questions in the document. The questions asked how we identified in different categories and if we felt privileged or not.

For homework, answer the rest of the questions that we started discussing today.

Notes from 29/3-22

We started off by writing our name, class number, and date on the index cards. Then we answered questions on our note cards: What is your message? and What change does it ask? I interpret it as asking about who we want to be and what we need to change to be that person. After discussing it with a friend I found out that my change is very much dependent on who I spend my time around because that is going to be who I am going to turn out to be.

Then we read Tyler’s class notes from the last class. Mat said that we should not use frog scholar right now and not cite Wikipedia.

We talked about who has power and how we want to use our power.

Maia presented her mentor talk. It was with Barack Obama and Misty Copeland, a principal dancer. They talk about how they grew up in african- American families, and how that changed their careers back in the day. Issues with race exist and they just need to deal with it or at least had to. Maia said that ballet is mostly white, and ballet does not have a book and they told somebody else. She explained the difficulties that Misty used to have and what it is for more biracial dancers. Barack and Misty come from different places but both had faced problems.

Then it was Jane’s turn to present. It was about dyslexia and different people living with it. They are saying that it is not bad if you use the right approach to it. In general, people just need to know how to handle it better. It is not a problem but it is an add-on to your personality according to one of the children. Jane spoke about the different perspectives that the people in the video explained. Mat said that Jane’s perspective is still important.

We talked about google research. And asked who was starting.
